DOW Accelerates Defense Posture with Major Contract Awards and Strategic Investments
Multiyear SM-3 Block IB Interceptor Award
The Department of War has awarded a $6.3 billion multiyear contract to RTX’s Raytheon division for the production of SM-3 Block IB ship-based missile interceptors. This award secures a stable procurement stream through FY XX, locking in unit pricing and ramping up U.S. missile defense capacity in the Indo-Pacific and European theaters.
By leveraging a multiyear framework, the department anticipates cost savings of up to 10 percent over single-year buys, while providing Raytheon with production certainty that supports expanded manufacturing and workforce investments in missile defense facilities.
Certification of Bath Iron Works Production Capacity
The War Department has certified production capacity for a second Zumwalt-class guided-missile destroyer at Bath Iron Works in Maine. This certification follows rigorous technical assessments of assembly lines, workforce readiness, and supply-chain resilience.
Certification paves the way for the next contract award, underpinning the Navy’s long-term shipbuilding plan. It secures Bath Iron Works’ position in the destroyer industrial base and signals confidence in U.S. surface warfare modernization through 2030.
$350 Million Quantum Computing Initiatives
In a parallel move, the department announced $350 million in funding for quantum computing research and development. The investment will accelerate the maturation of quantum algorithms, secure communications protocols, and advanced materials research that underpin next-generation defense applications.
Key areas of focus include:
- Quantum-resistant cryptography to safeguard classified networks
- High-precision sensing applications for navigation and reconnaissance
- Quantum acceleration of mission planning and logistics simulations
These strategic initiatives reinforce the War Department’s commitment to maintaining technological overmatch and ensuring U.S. defense superiority in critical emerging domains.
