War Department Accelerates Defense Production and Security Measures

On Aug. 17, the War Department announced a comprehensive security review across 30 U.S. academic institutions. This initiative aims to safeguard sensitive defense research, ensuring foreign adversaries cannot exploit university partnerships. By deploying audit teams to universities with Department-funded projects, the department seeks to strengthen institutional controls, protect intellectual property and reinforce national security.
RTX Secures Navy Tomahawk Production Award
Also on Aug. 17, the department awarded RTX a multi‐year contract to accelerate production of Navy Tomahawk cruise missiles. Under this award, RTX will expand its manufacturing lines and scale workforce training to meet increased demand. The contract value was not disclosed, but it represents a strategic commitment to boost the ready‐to‐fire inventory of long‐range strike munitions, enhancing deterrence capabilities in contested environments.
Boeing and RTX Forge SM-3 Block Production Partnership
On Aug. 14, the War Department, Boeing and RTX announced joint agreements to fortify manufacturing of SM-3 Block IIA and SM-3 Block IB anti‐ballistic missiles. These arrangements include:
- Facility upgrades to increase production throughput by 30 percent over five years.
- Implementation of advanced supply‐chain management software to improve material lead times.
- Co‐investment in workforce development programs targeting high‐precision manufacturing skills.
The combined effort is estimated to yield an additional 150 interceptors by fiscal 2028, closing critical gaps in the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense inventory and supporting allied missile‐defense commitments in Europe and Asia.
